P.M. BRIEFING : Tuna Boat Observer Funds Are Low
The government is running out of money to pay observers on U.S. tuna vessels to make sure dolphins are not needlessly injured or killed, a Justice Department lawyer said today.
Charles W. Brooks said unless Congress comes up with an additional $1 million, the government after May 30 may not be able to comply with a court order and staff all tuna boats with monitors.
Brooks appeared at a federal court hearing in a case brought by environmentalists over the netting of tuna by commercial fishermen. Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Thelton.
