China today announced the temporary closing of the country’s most adventurous newspaper. Staff members said its editor of eight years had been fired.

Founded in 1980, the World Economic Herald, based in Shanghai, has printed news and opinion on domestic and foreign topics that has not appeared anywhere else in China.

State television quoted Jiang Zemin, Communist Party chief of Shanghai, as telling a meeting of 14,000 party members in a sports hall in the city that the Herald “would be reorganized.” Jiang did not say what this meant or when the newspaper would reappear.
