County Bar Honors Priest for Aid to Poor
The Rev. Alice Callaghan, founder of Las Familias del Pueblo, was honored Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Bar Assn. for her aid to poor families living and working in downtown Los Angeles.
Callaghan, an Episcopal Church priest who founded the center in 1981, was presented the association’s third annual Distinguished Citizen Award at a luncheon at the Biltmore hotel.
The award is given to a person who is not a practicing lawyer or judge and who has made “a significant contribution to the administration of justice which affects or comes to the attention of the public.”
Las Familias del Pueblo provides among its services a weekly legal clinic for work-related legal problems of garment workers.
