WORLD : Illegal Aliens Caned in Singapore
A Singapore court today ordered 10 Indian illegal immigrants caned and jailed in the first such sentencing under a tough new immigration law.
The 10 pleaded guilty to overstaying in Singapore for up to a year and, in one case, to having entered the country illegally, immigration officials said.
They were each sentenced to three strokes of the cane and to jail terms of between three and eight months. The law, which went into effect April 1, prompted about 10,000 illegal Thai workers to leave Singapore in the two weeks before it was implemented.
