An Indian tanker that struck a reef and spilled up to 1.5 million gallons of oil into the Red Sea was refloated and towed to the Saudi Arabian port of Jidda, shipping sources said. They added that the leaks were plugged. However, the spill from the 276,744-ton Kanchenjunga could damage coral reefs and turtle breeding grounds, environmental experts said, as crews began breaking up the 50-mile oil slick. Lloyd’s Shipping Intelligence Unit reported earlier that 1.5 million gallons had leaked, but Saudi-based sources who requested anonymity said about 924,000 gallons spilled. By contrast, the Exxon Valdez is believed to have spilled about 10 million gallons of oil into Alaskan waters last month.
