WORLD : $15 Million Left in Hirohito Estate
The late Emperor Hirohito, one of the world’s wealthiest men before he was stripped of his assets after Japan’s defeat in World War II, has left his family $15 million, the Imperial Household Agency said today.
Hirohito never wrote a will but his aides have come up with a plan to divide his estate between his widow and his eldest son, the agency said.
Hirohito, known posthumously as Emperor Showa, died Jan. 7 at age 87 and left $15.4 million in stocks and savings accounts, the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported. Hirohito’s eldest son and new emperor, Akihito, will be given half the cash assets under the plan, and his widow, the Empress Dowager Nagako, will receive the other half.
