WASHINGTON — USAir announced a $1.3-billion deal today with McDonnell Douglas Corp. to buy 20 of its MD-82 aircraft and take options on 20 more.
The first two of the new planes would be delivered in September, 1992, and the remainder of the firm orders and options, if taken, would be delivered to USAir at the rate of one per month starting in January, 1993.
The planes will carry about 143 passengers, including an eight-seat first-class section.
Washington-based USAir, the nation’s ninth-largest airline, is a long-time operator of McDonnell Douglas aircraft.
Last month, USAir ordered 18 Boeing 737 jetliners and took options on 36 more in a deal with a potential value of about $1.7 billion.
