Wilding

The story of the woman jogger who was savagely attacked in Central Park has horrified even supposedly jaded New Yorkers. The reported nonchalance of the teen-agers who participated in the attack has made the event even more sickening.

There was, however, in the April 26 article, mention of a 15-year-old girl named Shante Chunn and her friends who came from their high school in Harlem to express concern (Part I).

It is important for everyone who hears about this terrible crime to remember that the kids who went out “wilding” that night are not the only representatives of their peer group.

Shante and her friends should receive as much attention for their efforts to bring healing to the situation as the attackers receive for their savagery.
