San Jose has surpassed San Francisco in population to become the third largest city in California, a state report said. The state’s total population has climbed to more than 28.6 million. San Jose, which lies at the heart of the Silicon Valley with its high-tech electronics industries, grew by 10,100 in 1988 to a total population of 738,400, according to the state Finance Department’s Demographic Research Unit. Meanwhile, San Francisco had declined as of Jan. 1 by 4,800 people, to a population of 731,700, officials said. California’s population increased during the 1988 calendar year by an estimated 666,000 people, or 2.4%, to 28,662,000. The estimates are based on information collected since the 1980 federal census. Los Angeles, the state’s largest city, grew 1% to 3,400,500 and the second largest, San Diego, increased 2.7% to 1,086,600.
