From Times wire services

After five troubled years as head of the federal Liberal Party, Canadian opposition leader John Turner said today he is resigning.

Turner said his departure, decided on after consultation with Liberals across Canada, is “in the best interests of the party.” With his family looking on from the front row of the national press theater, the former prime minister said he will quit after the national party executive selects a date for a leadership convention.

Turner, 59, a former Toronto lawyer, served as prime minister for a short period, then steered the party through more than four years in opposition before losing last November’s election to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s Conservative Party. Turner said he will remain a member of Parliament from his constituency.
