Laguna Beach : Council Delays on Plan for 800 Historic Homes

Share

The City Council has delayed action on a controversial measure requiring city approval for any modifications to be made to the more than 800 historic homes found within city limits.

The proposal, which was aired during the council’s regular meeting Tuesday night, would have waived certain city codes dealing with parking and building on the historic home sites in exchange for the homeowners’ agreement to list their houses in the city’s register of historic homes.

Once listed on the historical register, houses may not be demolished or remodeled without first going through a hearing before the city’s Design and Review Committee, according to Tamara Campbell, a city spokeswoman.

After a show of hands from about 150 dissatisfied homeowners during the meeting, the proposal was sent back to the Planning Commission for further study and modification, officials said.

Council members said that the option of placing the homes on the city’s historical register should now be voluntary.
