North’s Rank, Pension Intact, Marines Say

WASHINGTON — The Marine Corps, citing conflicting laws, backed away Friday from an earlier determination that retired Lt. Col. Oliver L. North would lose his officer status and his $1,900 monthly retirement pay because of his conviction on three felony charges Thursday.
“We must stress that no action has been taken at this time,” said Lt. Col. Fred Peck, a Marine Corps spokesman. Peck said the effect of North’s conviction is “unknown at this time” and is being reviewed by Marine Corps attorneys.
