Williams Wins Diving Title in World Cup

A hectic week for Olympic bronze medalist Wendy Lian Williams of the United States ended with an upset victory over Olympic gold medalist Xu Yanmei in the women’s platform event Saturday at the FINA World Diving Cup.

Williams, 21, a junior at the University of Miami, scored 257.91 points for four dives. China’s Chen Xiaodan, who was fifth in the Olympics, was second with 251.01, and Xu, who missed on the third of her four dives, placed third with 245.07.

Olympic three-meter gold medalist Gao Min of China took the first step toward being the only double gold medalist by winning the women’s one-meter springboard event.

China’s Tan Liangde, a two-time Olympic silver medalist behind Greg Louganis, beat American Kent Ferguson to win the men’s three-meter event.
