The Foreign Affairs Ministry on Sunday denied Iraqi reports that France is negotiating with Iraq about a plan to rebuild a nuclear power plant destroyed by Israeli warplanes in 1981.

The ministry spokesman denied a statement attributed by a newspaper in Sharjah, one of the United Arab Emirates, to Hussein Kamal, Iraq’s minister of industry and military production.

The newspaper, Al Khaleej, quoted Kamal as saying, “Iraq is determined to rebuild the Tammouz nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes, and negotiations for this purpose have started with France.” Kamal was quoted as saying Iraq has no intention of manufacturing or possessing nuclear weapons.
