GM Tests Quick-Change Oil Service in Four Cities

General Motors Corp. is offering quick oil changes through a pilot program at about 100 dealerships in four cities.

The company said in a written release that it has established programs at GM dealerships in Birmingham, Ala.; Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh and San Diego. Each of the dealerships have areas set aside for the service, and prices are based on other quick oil change offers in each of the cities.

GM’s test is to end in September.

Last month, Ford Motor Co. said its pilot quick oil-change program that it had operated since October was being made available to dealers nationwide who wanted it.

John Kerekanich, accessory merchandising manager for Ford’s service and parts division, estimated that a dealer would spend no more than $22,000 to set up a quick oil-change operation.

Chrysler Corp. spokesman Tom Houston said the auto maker surveyed its dealers a few years ago and found no overwhelming desire for the corporation to set up such a program.
