A 22-year-old San Diego man was arrested on suspicion of robbing a Tustin bank Monday after police claimed that he tossed cash out the window of his getaway car during a freeway chase.

“The suspect began throwing money out the window, gaining the attention of all parties on the freeway,” Tustin Police Sgt. Mark Bergquist said.

Eric Raymond Martin, 22, was arrested about a mile from the 17th Street off-ramp of the Costa Mesa Freeway, where the getaway car was abandoned, Bergquist said.

The suspect “was located inside a commercial building, where a K-9 unit was used to flush him out,” Bergquist said. Martin, who was taken into custody without incident or injury, was being held at Tustin City Jail pending further investigation by Tustin police and the FBI.

The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash about 3 p.m. after giving a note to a teller demanding cash at Far West Savings, in the 600 block of East 1st Street.

Police responding to the robbery saw the suspect’s vehicle entering the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway at 4th Street and gave chase, Bergquist said.
