Greek and U.S. negotiators Monday began a 17th round of talks on U.S. military bases in Greece, the last set of discussions before the June 18 national elections.

The previous talks ended April 14 with “no notable progress made,” a government spokesman said.

Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou reiterated Saturday during a pre-election speech that a national referendum would determine the future of the bases if an agreement was reached by the two governments.

The five-year base agreement expired Dec. 20.
