L.A. Council Committee Backs Building of Northridge Church
Despite protests from nearby residents, a Los Angeles City Council committee backed permits Tuesday to allow the construction of a $1.5-million church in a Northridge neighborhood already troubled with traffic from nearby Cal State Northridge.
The Mandarin Baptist Church would be allowed to build a sanctuary, auditorium and classrooms as long as members abide by requirements that include providing ample parking and lush landscaping and constructing a wall around the church. Also, church functions must be held no later than 9:30 p.m.
The council’s Planning and Environment Committee approved a conditional-use permit to build on the site at 17833 Nordhoff St. and recommended final approval by the full council.
About 10 nearby residents complained that the church will bring unwanted traffic to their streets. Pastor Daniel Hsu said Sunday services and other activities do not take place at peak traffic hours and will not affect the neighborhood.
