Backers of the effort to bring the 1998 Winter Olympics to the Reno-Lake Tahoe area expressed relief with a twinge of frustration after they learned all four U.S. cities bidding for the games remain in the running.

“We’re very pleased to be going to Des Moines. We’re looking forward to the next 3 1/2 weeks,” said Bill Martin, executive director for the Reno-Tahoe Winter Olympics Organizing Committee.

The Reno-Tahoe group and representatives of Anchorage, Denver and Salt Lake City will make final 30-minute presentations during the Olympic Organizing Committee’s June 4 meeting in Des Moines, Iowa.

The board then will choose one as the U.S. candidate for the 1998 Winter Olympics bid.

Bob Cashell, the Reno-Tahoe group’s executive director, was a little disappointed that all four cities got the nod Tuesday to remain in the bidding for the 1998 games.
