The last graffiti-covered subway train in New York City quietly went out of service Friday, officials said.

All of the 6,245 subway cars have been replaced or gutted and rebuilt and scrubbed clean as a result of a five-year program that at its height used 1,000 workers.

Transit Authority spokesmen said that, if a car is marked up, it will be pulled out of service and cleaned within 24 hours before being allowed back on the tracks.
