From Times staff and wire service reports

Rising tension, scattered violence and no reports of progress in negotiations marked the third day of a teachers’ strike that has crippled the educational process in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

At Hollenbeck Junior High School, extra police were assigned today after three “Molotov cocktail” firebombs were thrown at the school overnight. There were no reports of injury.

Elsewhere, Banning High School teacher and football coach Rocky Garibay was charged with assault on a school employee this morning after he allegedly struck and spit at a substitute teacher last night. Authorities were also investigating a report at Nightingale Junior High in which a striking teacher allegedly drove his car into a school district mini-van carrying substitute teachers, then yelled obscenities and threw nails under the van’s tires, a district spokeswoman said. There were no reports of injuries.
