2nd Anniversary of Stark Attack Marked
The Navy paid tribute Wednesday to the 37 sailors killed aboard the frigate Stark, attacked in the Persian Gulf two years ago by an Iraqi jet.
The memorial service was performed aboard the destroyer Curts, now on duty in the northern gulf, the Navy said.
A Navy spokesman in Bahrain said a 21-gun salute was fired as Stark survivor Philip Matagavage--a sonar technician--dropped a wreath in the gulf near where the ship was hit.
The Pentagon, meanwhile, disclosed that $27.3 million in compensation for the dead has been paid by Iraq and distributed to American families. Millions in additional claims for the wounded and damage to the ship remain to be settled, a spokesman said.
