54 Soviet Tanks, 600 Troops Pulled Out of Hungary
The Soviet Army pulled out an additional 54 tanks and 600 soldiers from Hungary on Friday in a ceremony highlighted by a military parade, an army band and a Soviet trooper singing a patriotic song in Hungarian.
The Soviets withdrew 31 tanks from Kiszkunhalasz base in southern Hungary on April 25, the first step in a partial Soviet pullout from East Europe announced by President Mikhail S. Gorbachev last December.
The plan calls for the Soviet army to be reduced by 500,000 men by the end of 1990.
About 62,000 Soviet soldiers are stationed in Hungary. The Soviets have promised to withdraw 10,000 troops, 450 tanks, 3,000 vehicles and more than 200 artillery pieces by the end of next year.
