NAMES IN THE NEWS : Philip Backs Religious Translations
Britain’s Prince Philip today launched a global interfaith organization that plans to translate into English key texts of the world’s most important religions.
Prince Philip said the publishing venture will involve religious texts of the Bahai sect, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism and Taoism.
Negotiations are under way to include other faiths, officials of the International sponsoring Sacred Literature Trust said at a news conference in New York.
“The trust will make a significant contribution to interfaith dialogue and, hopefully, to a better understanding between followers of different faiths,” the prince said.
He said the idea of setting up the trust originated from a meeting in 1986 in Assisi, Italy, of the World Wide Fund for Nature. Participants, aware of the link between nature conservation and religion, created “The Network on Religion and Conservation,” which led to the formation of the trust, he said.
