Ralph Peterson, 89; LACC Choral Director
Ralph J. Peterson, who began teaching music at Los Angeles City College when it opened at its present site on North Vermont Avenue in 1929, died Sunday at a Glendale hospital. He was 89.
Peterson took over the school choir in 1935 and directed hundreds of concerts before his retirement in 1965.
During his tenure, the award-winning choir became well known throughout the Southland. In addition to regular concerts at auditoriums and churches, it was heard regularly on KHJ radio.
At his death, Peterson was the oldest surviving founder of the state Choral Conductors Guild.
A funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, La Crescenta.
