San Dimas : Voluntary Recycling OKd

Share

The City Council this week voted unanimously to implement a voluntary curb-side recycling program that will begin sometime this summer.

Under the program, which is similar to those in other cities, residents will receive three stackable bins--one each for paper, glass and aluminum--to place on the curb with their other garbage. The cost to the San Dimas Disposal Co. of providing the recycling service will be offset by money received for recyclable materials and a 25-cent monthly rate increase for customers.

Councilwoman Maria Tortorelli, a leading proponent of recycling, said the city had to tackle the issue of reducing the amount of waste entering local landfills.

“There is some talk that there may be legislation to penalize cities that don’t have recycling programs, by charging them higher fees at the dump,” Tortorelli said. “We felt it was something we wanted to work on ourselves, rather than have it mandated.”

Based on the success of curb-side recycling programs in Claremont, La Verne, Walnut and Duarte, Tortorelli said she hopes 70% of the residents will participate at least some of the time.
