The World : Rebels Attack San Salvador

Share

Leftist Salvadoran guerrillas attacked the 1st Army Brigade headquarters in San Salvador with rocket-propelled grenades and rifle fire, and fighting raged in the capital for more than an hour. Col. Orlando Zepeda, commander of the brigade, said six rebels were killed. He said five members of the national police, one soldier and three civilians were wounded. Zepeda said four men aboard a jeep fired U.S.-made M-69 grenades and Soviet-made RPG-18 rocket-propelled grenades into the brigade headquarters at dusk. He said six or seven projectiles landed inside the base perimeter, causing property damage but no casualties. The fighting was the heaviest in the capital in at least a year. The rebels have vowed to disrupt next week’s inauguration of President-elect Alfredo Cristiani.
