18 Held in W. Germany After Political Brawl
From Reuters
PASSAU, West Germany —
Police detained 18 people Saturday in the wake of a brawl between leftist protesters and members of a far rightist party.
A rally by 2,500 members of the right-wing German People’s Union (DVU) drew a counterdemonstration by 700 young leftists in the Bavarian city of Passau, a police spokesman said.
Fighting broke out as DVU members tried to make their way around the demonstrators into a meeting hall. The 18 people detained were charged with assault, carrying weapons and resisting police, the spokesman said.
