Welfare Reform Proposals

Share

I predict your editorial will stir up a hornet’s nest. If you wanted to manufacture a reason for public cynicism you couldn’t have designed a better one.

The panel you wrote about was composed of the former and current CEOs of Du Pont, and the Times Mirror Co., and other distinguished persons from many fields of endeavor. Their proposed improved plan for social welfare is undoubtedly a good one. But how do these exemplary members of society recommend the plan be funded? By taxing all Social Security benefits that exceed what an individual has paid in!

What’s wrong with increasing the tax bracket above 28% for all CEOs and other distinguished citizens with incomes over some substantial amount? Maybe panels for improvements should consist of ordinary people rather than distinguished ones.
