Cypriot police said they have arrested six men with Lebanese passports who were planning to kill a prominent, unidentified Lebanese by shooting down his helicopter with a surface-to-air missile. A police spokesman said two Soviet-made SAM-7 missiles with their launchers were found in the sea off Larnaca airport, which is used by helicopters serving the Christian enclave of East Beirut. The spokesman said the men arrested had brought the arms from Lebanon by boat and had hidden them underwater for later use. Two amateur divers stumbled on the missiles by accident. Thousands of Lebanese have fled through Cyprus since mid-March, when fierce artillery duels erupted in and around Beirut.
