Christer Pettersson, on trial in Stockholm for the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, pleaded innocent, and the defense complained of serious irregularities in the prosecution’s case. The 42-year-old defendant told the Stockholm district court: “The murder of Palme was a vile deed which I could never have brought myself to do.” His lawyer, Arne Liljeros, attacked the main evidence against his client--the testimony of Palme’s widow, who identified Pettersson in a videotaped lineup. “Lisbet Palme never saw Christer Pettersson in real life, but only on a video,” Liljeros said. Pettersson is accused of shooting Palme in the back Feb. 28, 1986.
