Northern Telecom Announces Layoffs: Northern Telecom will lay off 665 employees in Nashville, Tenn., as part of a massive reorganization announced last December, company officials say. The company’s Nashville office complex, which had 850 full-time and part-time employees at the beginning of this year, will be reduced to about 185 workers by year-end as its manufacturing segment is shut down, the officials confirmed. Spokesman Jeff Benson said many high-tech jobs and equipment will be moved to other states, although the firm’s headquarters and a telephone refurbishing operation will remain in Nashville. The majority will go to Santa Clara, Calif., and Research Triangle Park near Raleigh, N.C., Benson said.
