A two-week stint by the band the Tom Tom Club originally scheduled to begin last Tuesday at the Variety Arts Center, is up in the air after Tuesday’s scheduled show was canceled due to the facility operator’s failure to secure a dance permit. Nick Masters, of the Variety Arts Center’s operating lessee EJH Inc., said Wednesday that the problem centered on minor building code matters and that the series of shows would be able to commence there Friday. But Los Angeles Police Det. Dick Rudell, who is in charge of permits processing, said the problem was actually a late application for a series of one-night dance permits, which was rejected by a division commander in light of unruliness of crowds at several rock concerts held there last year. Promoter Goldenvoice Productions had hoped to relocate the shows to the China Club in Hollywood, but the club has not yet acquired its liquor license. For updated information, call (714) 841-2872. In the meantime, refunds are available at points of purchase.
