Pope Plans October Visit to South Korea

Pope John Paul II will visit Seoul Oct. 7-9 to officiate at the 44th International Eucharistic Congress, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Church said Thursday.

The Pope will celebrate Mass at a ceremony scheduled for Oct. 8 at the Yoido Plaza in southern Seoul. About 1 million Korean faithful and 20,000 clergy members and laymen from 120 countries are expected to attend the ceremony, the spokesman said.

The Pope is expected to meet President Roh Tae Woo during his stay to discuss matters of common interest, a presidential spokesman said.
