Four Caltech professors have been elected members of the National Academy of Sciences, which advises the federal government on issues of science and technology. They are Robert Grubbs, chemistry; Frank Marble, jet propulsion; Carver Mead, computer science, and Ahmed Zewail, chemical physics.

Daniel Weitekamp, assistant professor of chemistry at Caltech, has received a $50,000 Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation of New York City. The purpose of the award is to promote the development of young scholars who demonstrate ability in teaching with performing imaginative research. Weitekamp’s research focuses on nuclear magnetic resonance, a technique for probing the dynamics of chemical reactions and for studying the molecular structure and properties of commercially useful materials.

Charles J. Gomer of Glendora, associate professor of pediatrics at USC School of Medicine, has received a Method to Extend Research in Time Award from the National Cancer Institute. Gomer will receive $1 million over the next five years for his research, which involves the evaluation of lasers and light-sensitive drugs to treat cancer.

Michael L. Falabrino, former San Gabriel mayor, has received the Award of Excellence from the San Gabriel Valley Medical Center Foundation for his contributions to the community and center. Falabrino served on the San Gabriel City Council for 24 years and is a member of the center’s board of trustees.

Ronald Milligan has been named Glendora’s Police Officer of the Year by the Glendora Kiwanis and Rotary clubs for his exemplary job performance, community involvement and professionalism.

Ann Hight, first vice president of Dean Witter Reynolds in Pasadena, has been elected president of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and Civic Assn. She is a former member of the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Trustees.
