WORLD : Ghana Expels Mormons, Witnesses
The government has banned the Mormon Church and Jehovah’s Witnesses and given their missionaries one week to leave Ghana.
The government of Flight Lt. Jerry Rawlings, in a statement Wednesday carried on state-run Accra Radio, accused the two groups of disturbing public order and threatening Ghana’s sovereignty. It said the government had canceled residence permits for foreign missionaries and other workers with the Mormon Church and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their churches were ordered closed. Accra Radio did not say how many people will be expelled.
