About 100 people braved below-freezing temperatures and gusty winds atop 14,000-foot-high Pikes Peak Saturday as an Olympic torch was lighted to usher in the U.S. Olympic Festival-’89 Games, to be held July 21-30 in several Oklahoma cities.

Oklahoma Olympians Kenny Monday and Kelly Garrison-Steves lit an Olympic torch from the Memorial Torch and passed it to members of the Pikes Peak Running Club, who carried it 25 miles down the mountain to the Broadmoor Hotel.

From there, the torch will be flown to Boise City, Okla., where it will begin a 77-county tour of more than 3,000 miles in 35 days to Norman, Okla.
