More research is needed to explore the potential health risks from the electromagnetic fields produced by power lines, particularly the effects on the nervous system and possible role in promoting cancer, a congressional study said. The paper also said that while most public concern has focused on high-voltage transmission lines, more attention should be paid to exposure to such fields from other sources, including household wiring and appliances. “It is now clear that 60 Hz (cycles per second) and other low-frequency electromagnetic fields can interact with individual cells and organs to produce biological changes,” the study said.
