A summer training program in job skills for teen-agers with special education needs is offered at Switzer Center, a Torrance-based nonprofit organization serving youngsters with learning disabilities.

The program, titled First STEP (Specialized Transitional Employment Program), is financed through a grant from the Private Industry Council of Torrance-Lomita-Carson and is available to youths 14 to 18 from those three cities who are enrolled in special education classes.

Participants initially attend employment training classes at the center before employment as tryouts at nonprofit agencies. The students work 20 to 30 hours each week, earning minimum wage in jobs such as gardening, aides at preschool or with the elderly, light clerical and janitorial work. Students can also be paid for some of the time they are involved in remedial summer school programs.

Participants will attend two four-hour orientation sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. The eight-week employment program begins on July 5. Interested parties should contact the Switzer Center at 328-3611.

In addition to the above services offered in connection with the Private Industry Council, the Training and Placement Service of the Los Angeles County Epilepsy Society offers free workshops on job-seeking, designed especially for people with epilepsy. Instructions cover everything from resume-writing to interview techniques. Career exploration is covered for those who need it. For more information or to sign up for an orientation session call 382-3674 or (800) 572-3330.
