Reporter Had Prior Engagement

Tony Aliengena’s entourage on his round-the-world flight temporarily decreased by one last week, when Times Orange County Edition reporter Jim Carlton flew home from Stockholm for a long-scheduled appointment: his wedding.

Carlton, 33, married Adriana Oviedo, 28, Saturday in Hawthorne. Carlton and his bride will leave today for the Soviet Union, joining the Aliengena group in Moscow on Monday.

Everyone will be in the Soviet capital for five days, but next Saturday Aliengena, his family, and Carlton resume the flight that is intended to put the 11-year-old from San Juan Capistrano in the record books as the youngest person ever to pilot a plane around the world.

Carlton and his wife will remain in Moscow for the five days, although “I’ll do two or three stories . . . during the honeymoon,” Carlton said. His wife, a secretary, will fly back to the United States next Sunday.

Carlton has been the only U.S. reporter on the round-the-world trip, which began June 5 when Tony’s plane and two other aircraft left John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
