Canadian Lynn Williams won the L’eggs Mini Marathon in New York’s Central Park by 14 seconds.

Williams pulled away from Yekaterina Khramenkova of the Soviet Union and Aurora Cunha of Portugal in the final mile of the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) race that attracted about 8,000 women.

The 5-foot, 102-pound Williams, the bronze medalist at 3,000 meters in the 1984 Olympics, was timed in 32 minutes 9 seconds.

Judi St. Hilaire, the U.S. record-holder at 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), was the first American finisher, placing fourth in 33:07. She beat several other well-known Americans, including Mary Slaney and Francie Larrieu Smith.

Slaney, the national record-holder at distances from 800 meters to 10,000 meters, finished 103rd in 40:08. Larrieu Smith, who won the event in 1985 and is a three-time Olympian, finished ninth in 33:22.
