The chief of El Salvador’s national fire department was shot and killed in an ambush near his home in what President Alfredo Cristiani said was a leftist guerrilla attack. Police said Col. Roberto Armando Rivera, 45, was driving to work alone when three men in a passing truck opened fire with Soviet-made AK-47 assault rifles. Rivera was hit several times and died in a military hospital as surgeons prepared to operate, police said. The military blamed the shooting on urban commandos of the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front.
