P.M. BRIEFING : Strike Idles British Rails, Subways

From Times Wire Services

A strike idled all of Britain’s railroads today and virtually all of London’s subway network, forcing millions of commuters to drive, cycle, walk or ride buses to work.

It was the second 24-hour strike in eight days by 75,000 national railroad workers and the eighth unofficial walkout in 12 weeks by the capital’s 10,500 subway workers.

The employees are demanding 10% wage hikes from state-owned British Rails and vow to stage another walkout on July 5.

Transport Secretary Paul Channon said the strike was “utterly intolerable.” He called on both sides to take their dispute to arbitration, saying the government would not intervene.
