U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Flag Burning as Protest

Share

No contrast between democracy and tyranny could be more graphic than two of the front-page articles (June 22), one dealing with the Supreme Court’s decision on the burning of our flag, and the other on the executions of Chinese for anti-government demonstrations.

One system required five years for its highest court to decide on the importance of free expression, and ended with an acquittal. The other took two weeks for kangaroo courts to rule on the evils of free expression, and ended with bullets to the heads of those convicted.

In burning our flag Gregory Johnson has earned our lasting contempt for his nauseous behavior, and I hope this country will never forgive his simple-minded actions.

What a riveting contrast between the heroic citizen of Beijing, who recently faced down tanks in Tian An Men Square, and Gregory Johnson, who burned our flag. This was a contrast between the best and worst in governments, and the best and worst in individuals.
