Ban on Mobile-Home Park Closings Extended

Share

The Santa Clarita City Council has extended for one year a moratorium blocking the closure of mobile-home parks within the city.

The moratorium was originally passed in July after the owner of the 60-space Desert Gardens Mobile Home Park announced plans to tear down the park and replace it with a commercial development, possibly a shopping center. Residents living in the 24 other mobile home parks in the city said rising property values in the Santa Clarita Valley could inspire other park owners to shut their parks and replace them with commercial developments.

The City Council, which unanimously approved the extension Tuesday night, said the moratorium was needed to give the city time to assess what kind of zoning could be provided for mobile-home parks in the city’s general plan. A citizens committee, working with city officials, is drafting the general plan, which acts as a blueprint for development.

Since completion of the general plan is still months away, council members said they had no choice but to extend the moratorium.
