Fishing : Deep-Sea Fishing Trip Just What the Doctor Ordered

A group of doctors from Panorama City Community Hospital usually take Wednesdays off to play golf. Last week, instead of them making their rounds on the golf course, the prescription called for a deep-sea fishing excursion on a charter to Catalina Island.

Each of the 31 physicians aboard the El Dorado out of Long Beach Sportfishing caught a limit of calico bass, and Milton Beck of Panorama City won the jackpot with a 25-pound white sea bass.

Herb Dorphlin was the bag-weight winner. With help from his daughter, his catch weighed 60 pounds.

Barak Glass caught the heaviest barracuda of the day, a 7 1/2-pounder, and Shivhays Singh caught the largest calico bass, 6 3/4 pounds.

Caldron of activity: Summer fishing is heating up and sand bass continue to play a major role. Joining the limit catches, calico bass now have started feeding voraciously.

The hot spots on day and twilight trips are Horseshoe Kelp and Rocky Point. Fishing at Catalina with live squid brings a wide-open bite.

The Outerlimits from L. A. Harbor Sportfishing worked Catalina over the weekend and 36 white sea bass were taken.

George Hawking of West Los Angeles won the jackpot with a 38-pounder.

Sportfishing: At Port Hueneme Sportfishing: George Sanders of Simi Valley, fishing on the Erna B, won the jackpot with an 8 1/2-pound calico bass.

The Eagle fished the Hueneme coast and anglers chalked up 185 calico bass, 30 sand bass, 10 rockfish and one barracuda.

The Ellie M anglers landed 90 calico bass, 30 sand bass and a barracuda.

At Cisco’s Landing in Oxnard: The Sea Watch fished the outside kelp and anglers returned with 211 calico bass, 20 sand bass and one halibut.

The Island Tac worked the shore kelp and landed 120 calico bass and three white sea bass.

Freshwater: Lee Hunt of Northridge, fishing at Castaic Lake, used spinner bait and caught and released an 11 1/2-pound bass.

Anthony Miller of North Hollywood landed a 14-pound catfish at Castaic Lake.

Russell Schultz of Van Nuys fished Santa Ana River Lakes and landed 22 pounds of catfish.
