The Pentagon said it does not know whether former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst Glenn Michael Souther gave damaging secrets to the Soviet Union but acknowledged that he was under investigation even before he defected to Moscow in 1986. “The investigation is still open. There is a damage assessment going on,” Defense Department spokesman Pete Williams told reporters. The Soviet Union said that Souther, 32, committed suicide last week because of psychological problems. He was praised in an obituary published in Moscow earlier this week as a valuable KGB agent.
