Bus drivers and garbage workers in two Polish cities won big pay increases after brief strikes, and Lech Walesa said his Solidarity trade union might not be able to hold back a wave of labor unrest. He called the Communist-led government of Premier Mieczyslaw Rakowski incompetent and lacking in ideas. Transport workers in Torun and garbage collectors in Wroclaw won 90% and 100% pay increases after stopping work for a few hours and two days, respectively. Bus drivers in Kielce went on strike for higher pay but suspended the stoppage pending upcoming talks. “We have been trying to curb the protests,” Walesa told reporters in Gdansk.
