Soviet Man Jumps Ship, Seeks Asylum in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. —
Federal agents Thursday questioned a young Soviet sailor who asked for political asylum after he dived off a fishing vessel into the Willamette River and was rescued by a fireboat crew.
Portland police said shots apparently were fired in an inside compartment of the ship before the man jumped Wednesday.
