Sudan’s tough new military junta made unauthorized possession of foreign currency a capital crime. Black market dealers and other citizens were given seven days to convert their holdings into local currency at the official exchange rate. After that, the junta said, any Sudanese caught with foreign currency would be tried by a military court and could face the death penalty. Sudan’s coup leaders also widened the crackdown on former government politicians but said that ousted Prime Minister Sadek Mahdi had so far avoided capture.
